Why have PAT Tests?
Portable Appliance Tests (PAT Tests) have become a quintessential part of any respectable health and safety plan for a commercial or residentially let property in the United Kingdom. PAT Tests are the easiest way to make sure your property complies with a wide variety of government legislation regarding the need for regular electrical appliance testing. They are needed in order to prevent the injury and death of employees and tenants alike. While PAT Tests are not, in and of themselves, legal requirements; they have been designed to comprehensively cover the legislation surrounding electrical safety in the workplace and in rental accommodation and are recommended strongly as a result.
PAT Tests are not, generally, a long process although the time it takes to complete PAT Tests can vary depending on how many appliances are being inspected in the test. They can usually be arranged and organised so that any disruption to your office or workplace is kept to a minimum, allowing for normal work days and only minor inconvenience. Your employees’ safety is what is paramount, however, and while the tests might not take too long, they are thorough enough to ensure no one is at risk while operating the appliances for their designed purpose.
In general, PAT Tests include a wide range of portable electrical appliances in their assessments. Such objects eligible for PAT Tests include: microwaves, fridges, TVs, computers, printers, monitors, vending machines etc. as long as they weigh less than 18kg. Each appliance will be checked externally, internally and environmentally, giving a complete overall assessment of the safety of the device and the area in which it is being used. If you have looked after your appliances and used them properly then you are likely to not experience any failures. If an appliance does fail, it will be decommissioned immediately and a replacement must be sought. There is no room for rule dodging when people’s lives are at stake.
