How to drain a heating system

Some of the best ways of keeping your heating system free of irritating sludge and debris build ups is by getting a power flush or a magnetic filter installed. However, before you do either of these it is vital you drain your heating system of water and turn off the central heating. This is a short and simple guide on how to drain your heating system; doing this can tell you just how bad the debris build up in your heating system is.

First of all, each radiator comes equipped with a drainage valve and a key which you can use to bleed or drain water when you want to inspect your heating system. All you need to do is insert the key and turn it in the direction that unleashes the water. Always remember to turn off the heating system and place a container under the valve first. When you have drained some water close the valve again.

Some radiator valves have a special outlet built in which you can attach a hosepipe to for fully draining your system. If you have one of these, just fit on the hosepipe and place the other end in the container and open the valve.

If the water you release is very dirty then you need a power flush as soon as possible. All you need to do to fully drain the system is keep draining until the water flow stops.
