Radiator Bleed
Some people sometimes ask how to perform a radiator bleed. Professional ‘DIYers’ often maintain that the process can be done easily by you. However, if you have no experience or you are unsure of the process, we recommend you use a qualified professional heating engineer for the radiator bleed. Not only will this ensure the peace of mind that the radiator bleed has been done properly, it will prevent any further breakdowns of your central heating system as a result of mishandling.
So why would you require a radiator bleed?
If you have noticed your central heating system is causing annoying problems such as a noisy boiler, leaky radiator, cold spots on the radiator and unpredictable hot water temperatures, it is not working at its optimum level. To bring it back to an efficient level, professionals recommend a full Power Flush to your central heating system. However before a Power Flush, people often opt perform a radiator bleed so they can determine the level of the problem. Sometimes performing a radiator bleed can bring your system working at a good level but in most cases, this isn’t enough.
How do you perform a radiator bleed?
As aforementioned, unless you are a confidant to do so, we always recommend you call in a professional to ensure the radiator bleed is done properly.
It is crucial that you switch off your central heating system when beginning the process. Fit a ‘radiator bleeding key’ onto the bleed valve of your radiator (usually found at the top on one end of the radiator) and turn it half counter-clockwise. You need to wrap a piece of cloth loosely around the key to catch any leaking water. When water is being expelled, you will hear a hissing sound. When water does begin to dribble out the valve, close it by turning the key about a half turn clockwise. Do not over tighten the valve.
