Radiator Drain

Bleeding a radiator is where you are checking whether the water in your central heating needs cleaning. A radiator drain is what you need to do when you know your central heating needs seeing to. This is also important if you are replacing an old radiator with something new. The purpose of a radiator drain is to get all the water out of your appliance before work is carried out. And My London Tradesman wants you to know how to do it the right way.

Every radiator comes equipped with a drain valve which you can use to radiator drain your radiator anytime of the year. All you need to do is use the copper key provided with the radiator to open the valve. Always make sure you turn the central heating off and that the radiator is completely cooled down before you do this.

You can either put a container beneath the valve or attach a hosepipe to the valve first. Some valves come with a special tap to attach a hose to so no water will stain your floors or walls whilst draining. Then attach the valve key and turn it in the direction that loosens the valve.

Water should then begin to exit the radiator. Leave the valve open until the water finally stops. Then your radiator has been fully drained. The colour of the water will tell you if there is a lot of debris and sludge in your central heating.
