PAT Testing

A PAT Test (Portable Appliance Testing) is an important part of any Health & Safety policy. It is a must for landlords, employers, suppliers and hirers etc. to take reasonable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of electrical equipment. The PAT Test is the process in which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety and to prevent harm to users of the equipment.

Any item with a plug is a portable appliance. This would include electric kettles, fridges, PCs, printers, monitors, extension leads, drills and even some large items such as vending machines and photocopiers. The level of inspection and testing required is dependent upon the risk of the appliance becoming faulty, which is in turn dependent upon the type of appliance, the nature of its use and the environment in which it is used.

Evidence of a PAT test is clearly visible to all users in the form of ‘Passed’ and ‘Failed’ labels attached to each appliance once the PAT test has been completed. A certificate/report is also generally produced, providing an outline of the details for each appliance test.
