Power Flushing
Power flushing is a very effective cleansing process designed to improve the efficiency and circulation of your central heating system and return it to its optimum operation. If a power flush is required and not fulfilled, it can lead to higher fuel bills and can effectively cost you a lot more to rectify boiler problems, as well as dramatically speed up the time for when you will need to have your system replaced.
During Power Flushing, water is pumped through the central heating system at a high speed (but low pressure). The whole power flushing process is made more effective by using specially formulated chemicals. There is also an instantaneous device that will reverse the flow of the water and result in a lot of turbulence in the radiators. This will loosen any harmful deposits that may have formed by internal corrosion and the associated particles and sludge will then be removed from the system.
Once the loose debris has been completely flushed from the heating system, the central heating will need to be reinstated to normal working order and clean fresh water will be pumped back into the system. The inhibitor is a fluid that is added at the end of the process to help prevent the build-up of future contamination and the need to have power flushing done again in the near future.
Power flushing is highly recommended when installing a new boiler into an old system, or the sludge could accumulate in the new boiler and lead to premature failure.
Power flushing will take between 4 and 8 hours depending on how many radiators you have. It is not only the radiators that will be flushed out but also the boiler, heat exchanger and the pipe work. This will help to extend the life of your system and keep it in the best possible working order.
Signs that you may require power flushing are:
- The boiler or pump is noisy
- The boiler fires up and then cuts out
- Reduced hot water temperature
- Some radiators have cold spots or are not working at all
- It takes an unusually long time for the system to warm up
- Radiators need regular bleeding
- Evidence of sludge or rust in the system
- Little or no hot water
